Today In The Fishroom~11/16/10 A. hogaboomorum

This is a pair of wild Amphilophus hogaboomorum that I collected in the Rio Cholteca in Honduras in 2007.  I have three of these fish (two males and one female) in a 360 liter tank. The lone male keeps the breeding pair active...and breeding.  This is a fish that is seldom seen in the hobby...even here in the USA.  It does look like one of it's "species cousins". A. Amarillo.







Also in the tank are a few small juvenile hogaboomorum that act as dither fish.



In this photo the breeding male is on the right...the breeding female on the left.  The NON breeding male is on the left.  Sometimes the female will visit his side of the tank and upset her mate.  This interaction strengthens the pair bond and stimulates breeding.

I like the faint pink on their gill plates. Are the stripes vibrant only during breeding?

In my opinion, the stripes arent vibrant during breeding and fighting. Stripes are more colorful and vibrant in normal times..

Look at the different photos of the same fish, for example the big male..

Misterno is correct.  The colors become more vibrant when in breeding dress.  The female appears to be the only one that gets that pinkish hue.  The male is more monochromatic.  What I find interesting about the fish is the beautiful trailers on their fins.  Even in the wild we found the same thing.

Mo beautiful squares, which unfortunately has no here, has a multi-CA Cichlid, our appetite increases more than files.
