http://aquariumscience.org/index.php/5-5-3-2-prime-and-safe/

-----------------

Testing for Ammonia
"These products warn the consumer that the API test kits for ammonia will record the “neutralized” ammonia so don’t believe the test kits. Just as always, the test kits measure the ammonia and the ammonium in the water combined. There is no “neutralized” ammonia. More marketing hype. When a supplier of a product tells you to ignore the test results as they aren’t accurate that should key something in one’s brain. A heavy dose of skepticism is very warranted.

These products also claim to neutralize nitrite and nitrate, which is another chemical impossibility. Then they claim to detoxify heavy metals, another thing which dithionite doesn’t do."

-------------

Chemistry of Dithionite

"Sodium dithionite removes chlorine because it is a reducing agent and chlorine gas is a strong oxidizing agent. It is exactly equivalent to sodium thiosulfate as a remover of chlorine, no better, no worse.

The reaction for sodium dithionite reacting with sodium hypochlorite (bleach chlorine) is:

2 Na2S2O4 + 8 NaClO + 4H2O = 4H2SO4 + Na2SO4 + 8 NaCl

There are several ways to write this equation. For instance in water sodium dithionite decomposes to sodium thiosulfate and sulfurous acid over a period of time:

2 Na2S2O4 + H2O = Na2S2O3 + 2 H2SO3

This sulfurous acid is the sewage smell you get with Safe and Prime. These two chemical species then react with the chlorine to produce table salt

Na2S2O3 + 4 NaClO + H2O = H2SO4 + Na2SO4 + 4 NaCl

2 H2SO3 + 4 NaClO + H2O = 3 H2SO4 + 4 NaCl

[K]So Prime and Safe do exactly the same thing as the thiosulfate conditioners.[/K]

Note that there are a whole series of sulfite reducing salts: thiosulfate, dithionite, dithionate, sulfite, metasulfite and bisulfite. They all are reducing agents and do exactly the same thing. Under some conditions Prime and Safe may partially convert to these chemical species. It’s immaterial.

Note the chemistry of sodium dithionite is well known as the compound is widely used in many applications, such as wood working. This chemistry includes the simple fact that sodium dithionite does absolutely NOTHING to ammonia, nitrite or nitrate. NOTHING! This is the reason Seachem doesn’t want to admit these two products are sodium dithionite."

------------------

"The bottle of Prime clearly states that Prime is:“hydrosulfite salts”

The MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for Prime says it is “Proprietary aqueous solution of complexed hydrosulfite salts”. And one cannot lie on material safety data sheets by law.
Hydrosulfite is another term for dithionite. “Salts” simply mean sodium.

Per Wikipedia:
“Sodium dithionite (also known as sodium hydrosulfite) is a white crystalline powder with a weak sulfurous odor.”
Sodium dithionite and sodium hydrosulfite have the same CAS number: 7775-14-6 & chemical formula so are in fact the same thing

False claim #4, Only Prime and Safe Remove Chloramine

A simple test was set up. In order to get better accuracy the level of chloramine was taken to four times the “normal” amount in tap water. Chloramine was added to a gallon of distilled water at the level of 4 ppm. Then the following water conditioners were added to cups of this water at a level double what was recommend on the label. This should leave 2 ppm of chloramine if the conditioner neutralized 1 ppm of chloramine.

Then the chlorine was tested with three different total chlorine test kits (Orthotolidine, SenSafe, LaMotte Insta-Test). The level of chlorine found was then subtracted from four. It was then divided by two to find the level of choramine each conditioner will neutralize when used at the recommended level.

Results
Prime (dithionite) 1.2, 1.5, 1.0
Safe (dithionite) 1.5, 1.3. 1.1
AmQuel Plus (Hydroxymethansulfinate) 2.2, 1.8, 2.4
Aquatic Experts TankFirst (Proprietary) 1.7, 1.1. 1.4
API Tap Water Conditioner (Thiosulfate) 1.0, 2.0, 2.2
Aqueon Water Conditioner (Thiosulfate) 1.8, 2.0, 2.1
Fritz Guard (Proprietary) 1.5, 1.1. 1.8
Tetra AquaSafe (Hydroxymethanesulfinate) 1.3, 1.4, 1.6
DIY solution of Sodium Dithionite 2.1, 2.8, 2.8
DIY solution of Sodium Thiosulfate 3.1, 2.4, 2.7
Control (nothing added) 0 ppm, 0 ppm, 0 ppm

[K]These nine products ALL neutralized chloramine at roughly the same level.[/K] So the two Seachem claims are simply marketing hype. There does appear to be an error in how the DIY solutions were made up but that is not important. (Not: Kendin yap formüllerinde sıkıntı vardır, yoksa aynı başarıyı vermeleri gerekirdi)

------------

The author does not think people should stop using them to condition their water.

Rather the author notes that Prime and Safe should not be used to “detoxify” ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. [K]This is simply because they don’t do that.[/K] Because they don’t do these things they are of no use during cycling or as a “tonic” for a sick tank.

Kolay gelsin...
